The Good:
The beginning of OPEN GRAVE was great…Sharlto Copley waking up in a mass grave during a rain storm at night with no clue what the hell was going on or even who he was and then staggering to a nearby house where there was a group of fellow amnesiacs just as clueless about what was up was really interesting and had my mind racing with the possibilities of where the story would go from this set up.
The Bad:
And then the movie got to the set up and it all went to hell. Of all the places this film could have gone I really don’t get why it had to go this route. Even if this was the way the folks behind the film wanted it to go (and I admit to liking what the “big reveal” ended up being) the way this movie unfolded was just awful.
The Ugly:
There were so many scenes of people screaming unintelligibly that I thought I was going to have an aneurysm.
Final Verdict: A decent set up and a nice surprise ending were not enough to make up for all the awfulness in between. There was a good movie to be made from this but everyone involved just dropped the ball.
Grade: D+

Sharlto has so much potential. I really hope he manages to pick some better roles.

The problem this movie had was that it didn’t know how to keeps its central message interesting. It just kept on throwing idea, on top of idea, on top of idea, and after awhile, nothing made a single lick of sense. Good review.

Thanks for stopping by. I agree the film had a certain aimlessness to it where it became evident that the folks behind it had a ton of cool concepts floating in their heads but dropped the ball when it came to presenting them on the screen.
