Carol Channing was born on this day in 1921. While most of the whippersnappers in this generation will either not know who the hell Carol Channing is or think she is just a character from an episode of Family Guy (Up yours, young people!), in actuality Carol is a veteran of stage and screen with multiple Tony Awards and even an Oscar nomination. Of course my love of Ms Channing comes from her iconic appearance as the White Queen in the 1985 Alice in Wonderland TV movie.
I don’t know what drugs the people behind this version of Alice in Wonderland were smoking but they had to be really imbibing when they came up with ideas for Channing’s White Queen. One minute she comes off like a doddering old bitty who just wants to help any poor little girl who has lost her way, lulling her prey into a false sense of security with a little ditty about jam and just when the young lass lets her guard down fully…BAM! She turns all satanic octogenarian drag queen from the bowels of Hell on her before transforming into a devil goat!
If that doesn’t scare the bejeesus out of you then you must have ice water running through your veins.
