Synopsis: Kate Beckinsale is back as leather clad vampiress Selene in the fourth installment of the Underworld movie franchise. This time out Selene has been cryogenically frozen for 12 years while the humans, now aware of the existence of vampires and lycans, have hunted the two species almost to extinction.
The Good:
Kate Beckinsale still looks insanely good in a skintight catsuit and she brings a decent amount of vigor to the action scenes.
The Bad:
This movie is pathologically joyless. You’d think that the squadron of writers for this movie could have found some way to interject a bit of humor into the proceedings (like maybe Straczynski who showed a deft hand at making serious genre not be so morose with his BABYLON 5 series) instead of having everyone in the movie so ultra-serious. This is not high art…it’s a stupid movie about werewolves fighting vampires.
And the performances were so stiff. While Beckinsale gets a pass since she has been playing this character the same way for 3 movies now, the rest of the cast should be ashamed of themselves especially Stephen Rea who blew the prime opportunity to go all out campy with his villainous scientist role but instead just laid an egg. And Theo James was less charismatic than a pile of leaves.
The Ugly:
The CGI for the werewolves was pitiful. I have seen better CGI on SyFy Channel movies of the week.
Final Verdict: This movie was not very good but it had some decent shootouts and a lot of explosions. If that type of thing floats your boat then I still think you should wait for it to come to Netflix. D+
