Synopsis:Eight friends meet for their monthly “couples brunch.” But what starts as an impromptu therapy session / airing of domestic grievances takes a sudden, catastrophic turn when the city falls victim to a mysterious attack. Trapped in the house and unsure of their fates, these seemingly normal people become increasingly unhinged to hilarious, surprising, and revealing results. (Source)

The Good:
The acting in this movie is great and everyone involved deserves props. For what is essentially a filmed play, the performances go beyond the sparsely isolated setting so that the viewer never feels like the “action” is pigeonholed by the limitations of the setting. And the way that each character dealt with the awful news in ways that varied from catatonia to denial, to eerie calmness to full nerd rationalizing was fun to watch.
I also really dug the darkness of the comedy. When dealing with such a serious subject matter being able to make fun is a necessity.
The movie also delivers a nice twist near the end where one of the characters does a complete 180 and one of the characters reveals previously hidden motivations and character traits.
And the fate of the late brunch guests was brutal but still funny as heck.

The Bad:
As much as I enjoyed the humor there were times where I would have liked to see the movie extend the seriousness a little bit more. True we got moments where the characters would seemingly begin to fully realize the danger they were in but those scenes almost always ended very quickly and switched back to the funny.

The Ugly
Not really a fan of that ending.

Final Verdict: Darkly comic and very well acted by all participants, IT’S A DISASTER is a very witty (and original) take on the end of the world/disaster genre that reaches far past its isolated setting in terms of delivering a very outsize and enjoyable movie watching experience.

Grade: B

  1. I too was disappointed by the ending, at the end of the movie I felt like I needed closure to whether they lived or died. A simple cutaway conclusion would have sufficed.
