Synopsis: Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary kung fu master, Ip Man. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China’s last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, THE GRANDMASTER features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary Asian cinema, including Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang. – (Source)
The Good:
The martial arts scenes in this movie are great. They range from just plain fun to watch to absolutely beautiful. The fight scene between Leung and Ziyi is both masterful in its martial arts wizardry and incredibly romantic as the two warriors attraction and longing is evident in every punch and parry.
Director Kar Wai Wong has created a truly visually appealing movie with scenes that looks as if they were painted on the screen.

The Bad:
Everything that is not a fight scene is torturous to sit through.

The Ugly:
The time jumps are so poorly done and do nothing to help the narrative flow of this movie.

Final Verdict: THE GRANDMASTER is a a beautiful films with some truly exquisitely shot and choreographed fight scenes but all the stuff that happens in between the martial arts is so laborious and restrained that it is hard to stay awake as one waits for the kung-fu to start up again.
Grade: C+
