My Name is Derek And I Am A Hate-Watcher

Admitting one has a problem is the first step to getting better, right? Anyway hate-watching is different from watching a show you hate because there is a part of you that wants to like the show despite all of its flaws. Hate-watching is also not like guilty pleasure watching because a guilty pleasure TV show is one that you love but are just ashamed to admit to enjoying. Nope, hate-watching is in its own special category and is horribly addictive.

Along Came Dexter

I was not always a hate watcher; I used to just be able to stop watching a show that I had begun to detest outright and never think about it again. case in point: I dropped HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER 5 seasons ago and then never even bothered to check out the finale to see if Ted finally met the friggin’ mother. But then came DEXTER Season 5. Season 5 of DEXTER took a show I loved immensely, that had just come off of a previous season that was probably some of the best TV I had watched in years, and just shit the bed. Lumen…no one wanted Lumen. Lumen was terrible.
Every season after was just worse than the one before and I angrily watched every episode. I complained about it to my friends and family…I sometimes even treated it like my own personal MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 and made fun of episodes while I was watching.
After DEXTER I was just hooked and I have found myself hate-watching at least one or two shows a season every season. I am hooked, I tells ya! And I can’t kick this habit! So with all that being said I figured I’d list the shows that I am currently hate-watching.

  1. I can understand where you are coming from with shows like Under the Dome (Dean Norris must be thinking “I went from Breaking Bad to this?” every day he’s on set), True Blood (you could make a drinking game out of every time someone shows their boobs) and Dexter (I’m still pissed off at Yvonne Strahovski-I sent her a friend request on Facebook and instead of politely declining she reported me, instead). However, I gotta draw the line at Supernatural. Yes, it has become somewhat repetitive in later years but dammit man I still get a kick out of that show just as much as when I binge-watched the first seven seasons in under a week. So, the first three I mentioned, yeah man I hate-watch right along with you. Supernatural is one that we will have to agree to disagree on. I’m glad you admit that you have a problem and I hope you make to 30 days so you can get your chip. πŸ˜€

    1. I am taking it one day at a time.
And I hate that I hate watch Supernatural because it was one of my absolute favorite shows once upon a time but man it has become hard to watch a full season. They do still pull off some really good one off eps but those usually have nothing to with the overarching season’s storyline.

  2. The only bad I see is you haven’t taken this far enough – you should video yourself making all the nasty comments at the TV and post them on Youtube, (and here) Ya’ know, edit it so you just have the funny stuff πŸ˜€ You don’t even have to show the program on TV or tell us what it is, people will figure out what show you’re watching, lol.

    1. I am still so annoyed that it is ass bad as it is. I mean Kevin Williamson, Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy should not produce such dreck.

  3. I used to be a hate watcher but I have so many shows I am watching that its got to the point that any fat has to be cut! Helix failed miserably in my eyes, The following started to get boring to me. True Blood is the best comedy series of the year so I keep watching that. I wish I had stopped watching Dexter after season 4 but I didn’t 😦

The last season of Supernatural wasn’t too bad. Under the Dome has one more chance, but if the character remain lobotomized i’m out.

Just finished watching the latest season of Continuum and man that show just did an excellent season. One of my favourites of the year πŸ˜€

    1. I have the second episode of Under the Dome on my DVR and I am dreading watching it so my hate watch may just turn into total hate and I will just drop it completely. The first episode of the second season was so awful.

      1. There both bad, the writers haven’t learnt there lesson. Gonna stick to my 3 episode rule and after that I just can’t keep watching it 😦

Shame because the concept is fascinating.
