Good, Bad & Ugly Review: Batman vs Robin

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: NA (Critics) / 97% (Audience)
Directed By: Jay Oliva
Written By: J.M. DeMatteis
Starring: Jason O’Mara, Stuart Allan, Sean Maher, Kevin Conroy and Jeremy Sisto
Studio: Warner Home Video

Synopsis: While Damian Wayne struggles to cope with Batman’s no-killing rule, he soon starts to believe that his destiny lies within a secret society known as, The Court of Owls. – (Source)

The Good:
The animated action scenes are very well done and the voice-acting, that was a bit off in the first film (SON OF BATMAN) has improved greatly. There is a series of scenes at the beginning featuring a villain called The Dollmaker that were very effective in their creepiness.
The interaction between the characters is really good too.
Talon was also a formidable villain.

bvr-3
The Bad:
The ‘Court of Owls’ storyline in the Batman comics was a dense sprawling tale with all sorts of intricacies that are completely tossed aside in this adaptation. I understand cuts needed to be made considering this film is 90 minutes long and all but it is sad that a movie dedicated to just the ‘Court of Owls’ tale wasn’t put into production on its own without having to further the Robin storyline.

bvr-2
The Ugly:
There are far too many moments where Damian Wayne/Robin is made to look like a total bad-ass while making Batman and (especially) Nightwing look less capable than the 10-year old sidekick does.

bvr-1
Final Verdict: A step up from the first movie in the “Robin, Son of Batman” series with the voice-acting and storyline being highlights while a bit too much effort is spent making Robin look great at the expense of other characters.

Grade: B-

  1. DC Animated movies haven’t been good in a long time (the last one was The Flashpoint Paradox). They need to get Bruce Timm back to show them how it’s done.

    1. Flashpoint was great and I liked both of the Justice League movies that followed it. Son of Batman was just dreadful though.
And Timm is back this summer with the Justice League: Gods & Monsters movie which I am really excited about.
