How the heck do you make a live-action version of one of the silliest/campiest 1980s Saturday morning cartoons ever made that somehow looks like an extra maudlin episode of VH1’s Behind The Music? Where is the silliness that was a hallmark of the old Jem show? Because it darn sure aint in this odd adaptation that seems to be Jem in name only.

Where is Synergy? Where is the holographic image changer? Where are the freaking Misfits?!?!? And if you were not going to embrace the all out ridiculousness of the source material then why even use the name for your film? No one who was a fan of the old cartoon is clamoring for a Disney Channel version of the story of how The Bangles formed and the actual target demographic for this movie probably has no freaking clue what Jem & The Holograms actually used to be. Everything about this movie and this trailer just confounds me.

  1. Growing up in South Africa I never saw the cartoon but I did have a Jem and the Holograms colouring book which I loved. This movie looks ridiculously lame.

    1. I was never a big fan or it (I was more a Transformers/GI Joe/Thundercats kid) but I did watch a few eps and had friends who were, and still are, big fans. Plus it just seems odd to take an odd little cartoon and try to make it so generic.

    1. Its a wasted opportunity though. if I were making this movie I would have gone the route of the Brady Bunch movies and played the entire ridiculous concept for laughs.

      1. It raises the question of why they paid for the name. I don’t think having the name will bring in anymore money and nothing related to the source material.

Again exactly what I thought when this film was announced.

      2. This is basically Jem in name only. And I was pretty sure this would be the way the film would go when it was announced too.
