The Good:
Director George Miller still has a knack for shooting really inventive and kinetic action that is in-your-face and puts to shame some of the other directors in the action genre who are half his age.
The movie is also just delightfully bizarre with so many choices in design that should make no sense but just seem perfectly right in this setting.
This movie also looks amazing with the different color palettes representing the desert in daytime and the bogs at night just popping off of the screen.
Tom Hardy proves a worthy successor to Mel Gibson even though he played Max a bit more grunty and animalistic than I expected. And Charlize Theron kicked all sorts of butt as a one-armed, truck driving amazon on a mission. Max’s name may be on the title but Theron’s Imperator Furiosa is just as much the star or this film.
It was also a hoot to see veteran Australian actress, Melissa Jaffer (who I loved as wacky medicine woman Noranti on FARSCAPE) kicking butt and busting caps in fools.

The Bad:
Why oh why did Miller feel the need to speed up all so many of the action scenes like he was making some sort of post-apocalyptic Charlie Chaplin movie?

The Ugly:
I was desperately wanting to love (or at least love to hate) the main villain in this film but I just couldn’t muster up much of a damn about Immortan Joe at all. He sure as heck wasn’t even close to being a Toecutter, despite both roles being played by Hugh Keays-Byrne which was a cool bit of casting, or Lord Humongous or even an Aunty Entity (even though they shared a similar taste in hair styles).

Final Verdict: A breakneck, non-stop action movie that finds veteran director George Miller in fine form and a cast very eager to match Miller’s devil may care passion, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD provides the one thing you definitely want in a big screen summer blockbuster and that is a whole lot of fun.
