Final Verdict

To be perfectly honest, I am not the biggest fan of the original MARTYRS. I found it to be a tad bit indulgent and it wallowed way too much in the torture porn basement for my tastes. However I give Laugier credit for making a film that was his singular vision and telling it in the manner he wanted to. It may not be my cup of tea but I respect the fact that Laugier delivered the movie that told the message he intended it to tell.
The remake is just a sanitized and “Hollywood” style horror movie that pretty much takes everything that made the original noteworthy and chucked it in the garbage in favor of delivering a lazy, empty run of the mill SAW-lite horror movie.
