Nothing About Alex and Maggie Feels Real
I am all for an LGBT relationship on this (or any other) show and I am all for Alex being the character on the canvas who comes out and begins accepting her sexuality. I was even all for Maggie Sawyer being introduced as Alex’s love interest because Maggie is a cool character who I have enjoyed in comic book pages and in animation alike. What I do have a problem with is the entire story of Alex coming out and falling for Maggie being presented like the most tone deaf, badly written early 1970s Afterschool Special in televised history.
Alex has been written like a person half her age who has been home-schooled and never exposed to cable TV or the Internet let alone a big city gal who works as a butt kicking alien hunting government agent. Her entire coming out was written so hamfisted and cringe inducing. It was like no one involved in the story had ever met someone who came out as an adult and just wrote the whole thing like Alex was a high school freshman who was experiencing any type of budding sexuality for the first time. Then things just got worse once Alex officially came out and started dating Maggie.
The relationship moved too fast, going from just dating to becoming instant life-mates and Alex (who should be a bit unsure in certain situations I grant you) started to repeatedly behave like a total bonehead with nascent control-freak tendencies. The kicker was Alex completely overstepping all normal boundaries when she met an ex-girlfriend of Maggie’s. I swear sometimes the way they write Alex in her relationship with Maggie seems like they are laying the groundwork to turn Alex into a crazy stalker when these two break up.
The whole “Alex is Gay” storyline has just suffered from really bad writing and its a shame because the story being told is a powerful one at its core, its just the execution has been all fracked up.
