I Know What You Did Last Summer – Good, Bad & Ugly Review

When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help. – (Source)

The Good: The kills weren’t the most inventive but I really did enjoy the brutality in the way The Fisherman dispatched of his “catches”. Another highlight of the film was the way it incorporated characters from the original ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ movies into this one. None of the appearances seemed forced and everyone felt like they belonged in this new updated world.

And there was one incredibly inventive way of including an OG cast member that should make fans of this franchise very happy because it definitely put a smile on my face.

But the absolute best part of this movie was the way it had the balls to take big, bold swings that shook up the status quo and tossed away the penchant some of these reboots have with making certain characters sacred cows.

The Bad: Aside from Madeline Cline (who was great in the role of the dumb hot girl archetype that is a staple of slasher horror), the rest of the new cast were less than memorable. None of them had the same impact as Julie, Helen, Ray and Barry even though most of them were obviously envisioned as updated versions of those characters. So I really didn’t care what fates befell them which is never good with this type of movie.

The Ugly: No matter how much I hoped and prayed for some retcon, poor Helen Shivers was still dead in this movie and she had no long lost twin cousin for Sarah Michelle Gellar to play either. I will go to my grave believing that Helen was the one who should’ve been The Final Girl of the original movie.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)

Final Verdict: A surprisingly entertaining update of a personal favorite slasher franchise that did more with the rebooted concept than I expected and could be a good inspiration for a certain other slasher franchise <cough>Scream<cough> to maybe take more chances than they have.
