The Wayback Machine: Victim

While today Candi Staton is best known for being a gospel singer (she was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame dontchaknow), back in the day she dabbled in that devilish secular music. While she is remembered for several songs, most notably “Young Hearts Run Free” (performed by Mercutio in the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet) she had bunch of other great songs…my favorite of the lot being “Victim”.

Candi Staton – Victim (1978)

Candi Staton is routinely discounted as a one hit wonder or just a disco-era singer. That is an insult to the woman and her talents in my book. Gifted with a voice that had a natural and earthy tone she knew how to work any song so that it would become a gritty piece of R&B heaven.
While not as big a hit as “Young Hearts Run Free”, I consider “Victim” to be her best song. Its a song about how she ignored the own advice from her songs by falling hard for a guy who eventually begins to take her for granted, treat her wrong, and even cheat on her. She conveys emotions ranging from anger, sadness, embarrassment and resignation but all wrapped in a very soulful package.
