The Good:
GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING!!!!!!! Excuse my momentary nerdgasm but you would have to be a much bigger hack than Michael Bay usually is to screw up a movie about GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING!!!!! You’d have to be a Paul W. S. Anderson or Uwe Boll caliber hack to ruin this concept. Thankfully neither of those douchebags were at the helm. Transformers delivered a true mindless/summer action/popcorn flick experience that gave me warm fuzzes about a childhood favorite instead of causing me obscene amounts of anger and angst. And using Peter Cullen (the original voice of Optimus Prime in the cartoon) was probably the best decision anyone associated with this film could have made. A different voice would have killed any hopes this movie had of satisfying the geek contingent.
The Bad:
What the fuck was that thing that Megatron turned into? Megatron is supposed to be a Walther P 38 U.N.C.L.E with a scope dammit! And there was not nearly enough Starscream.
The Ugly:
The Optimus vs Megatron fight should have been so much better but all the quick cut editing diluted what should have been the biggest event in the movie.
Final Verdict: Nitpicky issues aside, TRANSFORMERS did much more right than it did wrong. Sure it had all of the worst aspects of moviemaking that Michael Bay traffics in on a regular basis but being a loud, obnoxious movie full of overdone special effects and constant explosions is pretty much exactly what the doctor ordered.
