The onscreen Silver Surfer exceeded my expectations; the character looked great in general but was especially cool looking when in motion. Laurence Fishburne was a really good choice for the voice acting duties too. He gave the Surfer the proper amount of soulfulness in his tone and tenor. Chris Evans was really good as the Human Torch…he was funny and flirty and just seemed to be having the time of his life throughout the film. And the chase scene between the Silver Surfer and the Human Torch was exhilarating to watch.
The rest of the cast is horrible. Jessica Alba is a ridiculously bad actress who was forced to wear a ridiculously bad wig that a neophyte drag queen from a small town in Nebraska would have turned her nose up at. Ioan Gruffud had about as much appeal as toenail clippings. Julian McMahon played Dr. Doom as a cheap, Eurotrash hustler. And Michael Chiklis, while nailing the voice and gruff demeanor of the Thing, is 3 feet tall and the make-up effects for the character looked like they cost all of $9.99.
Tim Story directed this film like a cheesy sitcom when he should be going for large scale sci-fi adventure. And I don’t know who the genius was who decided that Galactus should be a big gas cloud but he or she needs to be banned from Hollywood forever.
Final Verdict: Lightweight and vapid with more bad casting than good helped to make FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER an daily forgettable trifle. The Silver Surfer was a cool looking visual and Chris Evans enhanced every scene he was in but overall the movie was insanely average. C-
