Good, Bad & Ugly Review: Rise of The Guardians

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 76% (Critics) / 84% (Audience)
Directed By: Peter Ramsey
Written By: David Lindsay-Abaire
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Isla Fisher and Jude Law
Studio: Paramount Studios

Synopsis: When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world. (Source)

The Good:
All of the voice actors did a really great job especially Alec Baldwin who I didn’t even recognize as North.
I also really enjoyed the concept of an Avengers type group made up of familiar storybook/fairy tale characters and the animation was top notch.
Also the character designs were really cool; the animators stayed away from the more traditional depictions of the characters and made some inspired design choices.

The Bad:
The over emphasis on the whole “believe in magic” stuff was a bit hokey and the inclusion of the children in the big final battle with the evil Pitch was the stuff of cornball kiddie fare that has been done a billion times before.

The Ugly
The movie suffered from a couple bouts of hyper messiness in some areas.

Final Verdict: A great concept with wonderful voice acting that sometimes stumbles under all of the hyperactivity. In the end it makes for a satisfyingly entertaining movie that kids and adults will like.

Grade: B
