After its victory over Leonidas’ 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes’ army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced into an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.- IMDb
So the RuPaul of the Persia, King Xerxes, is now turning his attention towards Greece after wiping out Leonidas and his Spartan army in this sequel to the Zack Snyder 2007 surprise hit that made a star out of Gerard Butler. Snyder isn’t the director of this picture (I guess he was too busy with MAN OF STEEL) but he did co-write the screenplay. Instead the reigns have been handed over to Noam Murro, a guy with only one feature film under his belt (some obscure comedy starring Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker) but I guess a long resume wasn’t what was needed for this gig; instead the studio was looking for someone who could ape Snyder’s style of directing from the first 300 film. And I will be damned if the trailer for this movie doesn’t make it look exactly like a Zack Snyder directed effort. All of the Snyderisms are there from the green screen scenery to the slow-motion action scenes to the CGI abs.
Of course none of this is bad in my estimation because I loved 300 and really want this sequel to be just as good. Even though if I was in charge of making this movie I would have just hired the entire cast and crew from SPARTACUS.
