The Good:
Those darn Minions are the best animated characters to be created in the last decade and they are the absolute best parts of this movie. They are goofy, hysterical and just plain bizarre and they really do need their own movie.
Steve Carrell was also just as good as the voice of Gru and the relationship between Gru and his adorable trio of wards continues to be sweet without venturing into cloying territory.

The Bad:
The storyline of this sequel seemed to be dumbed down considerably from the inventive story in the original film. El Macho’s plan was kind of lame and despite Benjamin Bratt doing a pretty funny Al Pacino in SCARFACE impression, so was El Macho as a villain even though he does get style points for riding a bomb-adorned great white shark into a volcano.

The Ugly
The bulk of the non-supervillain trying to take over the world stuff felt like warmed over storylines from one of those crappy ABC TGIF shows from the 1990s like STEP BY STEP.

Final Verdict: The characters are just as endearing and likable as always but the movie they are in is a bit on the lackluster side. That doesn’t completely stop this film from being entertaining but it does make you wonder just how much better this movie would have been if more time was spent in making it as original and interesting as the first movie.

    1. I was shouting “GELATO!” endlessly in my terrible Minion accent for the entire weekend after seeing this movie.
