The Good:
Jeff Bridges and Kevin Bacon seemed to be enjoying themselves in this movie so at least they were able to find a silver lining in this celluloid black cloud. I also thought the idea that the rest of the world saw Bridges and Reynolds characters as swimsuit model Marissa Miller and veteran actor James Hong was a pretty neat gimmick. I actually would have enjoyed the film more if those two had been the stars.

The Bad:
This movie is almost completely unoriginal and derivative of movies that have come before and I am not talking about paying homage to or adopting certain themes from other films. Nope, R.I.P.D. just rips off other (usually better) movies. And it does it so shamelessly that it probably should have been called R.I.P.O.F.F.

The Ugly:
Everyone involved with this movie should give part of their paycheck to their direct counterpart on the MEN IN BLACK films.

Final Verdict: Aside from the minor bright spots that are the performances of Bridges and Bacon, R.I.P.D. is like a big budget version of one of those foreign knock-off movies that other countries are always producing that badly copy major Hollywood blockbusters except it lacks any of the unintentional charm that those goofy movies tend to have and is just one gigantically insipid waste of time.

Grade: D-

  1. So if I buy this movie for a dollar at the flea market while it’s still playing in theaters it will probably be the original film and not a bootleg, right?

    1. It wouldn’t surprise if it were the genuine article, Universal is going to need to make some money off this stinker somehow.
