Synopsis: GRAVITY, directed by Oscar (R) nominee Alfonso Cuaron, stars Oscar (R) winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone. – (Source)

The Good:
This is basically a survival movie which is not a bad thing especially when it is done as well as GRAVITY. Bullock hits all of the right beats as the fish out of water who has to dig deep down inside herself to find the strength to overcome her predicament. And Clooney just oozes charm in his supporting role.
The heavy lifting, however, is done by director Alfonso Cuarón. In his hands GRAVITY is a visual delight and the tricks he uses are done perfectly especially his use of switching perspectives and the way he has made this film both amazingly quiet and small while at the same time being so loud and action-packed.

The Bad:
As great a visual achievement this film was and how impressed I was by the performances of Bullock and Clooney, I never really felt any real connection to the two characters they were playing. It honestly felt like two recognizable movie stars went to space not two astronauts.

The Ugly:
There were a couple of little nitpicky things that bothered me while watching the move and I was happy to find out later that they bothered noted physicist (and new host of COSMOS!) Neil deGrasse Tyson too so I will let him point out a couple for me:

Final Verdict: A gripping survival story wrapped in a truly awesome visual package by a top flight director with great performances by its two superstar lead actors. And see it in 3-D because it is one of the few movies that really takes advantage of the technology.

Grade: B+
