Good, Bad & Ugly Review: 300 – Rise Of An Empire

300a
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 42% (Critics) / 61% (Audience)
Directed By: Noam Murro
Written By: Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad
Starring: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey and Rodrigo Santoro
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

Synopsis: Greek general Themistokles leads the charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy. – (Source)

The Good:
The action was well-done (if a little derivative) and I still absolutely love the way the green screen technology was used in this film…everything looked snazzy just like in the first film. But the absolute best thing about this movie was Eva Green. She chewed up every bit of scenery that wasn’t green screen and was totally convincing in her action scenes. Plus she seemed to be having the time of her life playing this over the top character.

300b
The Bad:
The story was goofy as all hell from the origin story of Xerxes to the constant voice-overs by Lena Heady explaining the political operations of the different Greek city states.

300d
The Ugly
Sullivan Stapleton was as stiff as a plank of wood. He paled in comparison to Gerard Butler’s Leonidas and got totally swallowed up by Eva Green in every scene they shared.

300c
Final Verdict: This is one of those sequels that you find yourself asking why it was made. After seeing it I still can’t figure out the reason. This film is not egregiously bad but other than Eva Green’s standout performance there is nothing that really makes this something that I would consider must see.

Grade: C

    1. Add sparing people from paying to see mediocre action films to the list of positives that come with traveling abroad.

    1. I wasn’t in any rush to see it either but I was bored one Sunday and it was still in the theater so I decided to give it a shot.
