There are some good moments in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM mostly with the dinosaurs and the CGI for the creatures is still top knotch. The Pachycephalosaurus was especially cool and quite the scene stealer with its penchant for using its thick skull as a battering ram to hilarious effect.
I also thought that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard were able to recreate their chemistry from the first film pretty well. And Justice Smith was great comic relief as the totally out of his depth technician, Franklin.
J.A. Bayona does some pretty nifty camera work setting up really good looking and energetic scenes.I especially enjoyed the tense scenes of Owen (Pratt) and Claire (Howard) trying to take some blood from a lightly sleeping Tyrannosaurus Rex inside of a cramped trailer.
There was so much of this movie that was just paint by numbers retread scenes or situations from previous movies in the JURASSIC franchise. At some point the folks who make these films are going to have to get tired of re-doing the T-Rex popping up out of nowhere to kill the dinosaur that is about to eat the film’s heroes. I think it was done about 3 times alone in this movie.
The villain was a ridiculous ponce who was completely non-threatening and his plan was even more goofy than he was. And the “Big Twist” with one of the characters and clone technology was not really all that big of a twist and even worse was an unnecessary bit of horrible writing that added nothing to the movie at all.
Having Jeff Goldblum reprise his original JURASSIC PARK character of Dr. Ian Malcolm but to only use him as a bookend for the film was such a waste of a wonderful character and a an even better actor. It was made even worse by how prominent Goldblum was in the marketing and trailers for the movie. The folks at Universal made it seem like he was a major part of the movie when it was in for barely 10 minutes tops.
Final Verdict: A totally predictable and loudly silly bombastic popcorn movie but at the end of the day that is not a bad thing for a summer blockbuster offering to be especially one about rampaging dinosaurs. So if you liked the first JURASSIC WORLD then you will enjoy JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM just as much.
