Cover Me Monday: I Heard It Through the Grapevine

The Slits

This week we’ll take a listen to a version of the oft-covered song “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. This song was originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1966 for Motown. The song is a classic and has been reinterpreted through the years by everyone from Gladys Knight & The Pips to the Kaiser Chiefs. The version I am most fond of is by the British punk band The Slits. The Slits version took a standard R&B classic and roughed it up a bit so that it became a harder more rock-ish song.
