Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” is one of the greatest rock songs ever written and one of my favorite songs period. The thing about it though is my favorite version of the song is not the Zeppelin version but the Dolly Parton version…I know it’s downright blasphemous.
Dolly’s “Stairway” is a stripped down version of the song that is far more melancholy and personal sounding (which has a lot to do with Dolly tinkering with not only the arrangement but with the lyrics to make it so) and that intimate vibe is what makes this version of the song for me. Besides even Robert Plant himself bows down to Dolly’s version of the song.
Dolly Parton – Stairway to Heaven

Dolly Parton has one of the purest voices in music, country or otherwise.

It is unnaturally clean, isn’t it? There are no rough edges or anything to it…just purely melodic.

If you get a chance, listen to the cover of Jolene from Mindy Smith. Dolly backs her up on it and it’s gorgeous.

Dude you may have just given me next week’s cover song.

Make sure you find the CD version. For some reason the video drowns out Dolly’s vocals.

If you want you can find the cover done by the Little Willies featuring Norah Jones and make it a Jolene Cover Me Monday three way. Dolly, Mindy Smith and The Little Willies featuring Norah Jones.
