The Good:
The chemistry between the cast (especially the Big 4) was a highlight and showed how well the casting of these characters was done: Robert Downey’s heightened sarcasm as Iron Man, Chris Evans showed a gravitas as Captain America that I was not sure he could pull off when amongst these other actors/characters; Hemsworth continues to be a surprise in how well he plays Thor. But the highlight performance was Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner….he was quirky but intense and really seemed like a guy who was dealing with a split personality capable of tearing down a building.
Joss Whedon deserves props too for a pretty slick directing style that made all of the action scenes really pop but even more so for the writing (along with Zak Penn). The Whedonesque humor and wittiness made this movie even more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise.

The Bad:
All performances in this film were not created equal though. Scarlett Johannsen was a glaring weak link in this ensemble and I would not have been mad if the producers decided to go with a recast of the Black Widow like they did with The Hulk.
I also was not all that impressed by the alien horde that Loki teamed up with. They were personality free and made very little impact on me as a viewer.

The Ugly:
Joss Whedon continues his penchant for bumping off characters I really, really like.

Final Verdict: This movie was the definition of fun and is exactly what one should expect from a big time summer action movie. The acting, directing, writing and effects were all top notch and the more than 2 hours flies by before you even know it. THE AVENGERS may not be the best comic book movie ever made (that title still belongs to the THE DARK KNIGHT) but it is comfortably sitting right at the top of the list A-
