Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 61% (Critics) / 64% (Audience)
Directed By: Larry Charles
Written By: Sacha Baron Cohen, Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer
Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Jason Mantzoukas and Ben Kingsley
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Synopsis: The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. (Source)
The Good:
Sascha Baron Cohen is game, Jason Mantzoukas was a great sidekick and Ben Kingsley is great as usual. And the scene where Baron Cohen and Faris’ characters have a tender moment while assisting in the birth of a baby was hysterical.
The Bad:
But the laughs were not as consistently hysterical throughout the movie. Every joke was so forced and the comedy was so strained. This film was like an overlong Saturday Night Live skit and pretty much just as funny (or unfunny depending on how you view things).
The Ugly:
All of the funny parts of this movie were shown in the trailer.
Final Verdict: THE DICTATOR is an anomaly…a tepid and not-very-funny Sascha baron Cohen movie. After the raucously funny and daring films he has done in the past it is a major disappointment to have sat through what I quickly cam to realize was a concept better suited as a starring vehicle for Adam Sandler. I suggest Baron Cohen throw this character in the trash bin and never look back. D
