While not all that “jump out of your seat” scary, YOU’RE NEXT is a very thrilling movie that builds suspense extremely well. It also uses one of my favorite horror movie set-ups of a bunch of unsuspecting people all trapped in an isolated location getting picked off one by one. And those masks! Those were so creepy and the way the director used shadow and light to make the masks seemingly appear out of thin air was a neat trick.
Director Adam Wingard does some really cool visual tricks with the way he shoots this film with many shots looking like the audience is also a peeking in on the events through windows or cracked doors.
This movie also introduced a newcomer to the hallowed halls of horror movie Final Girls and I can’t wait to see her running for her life from masked psychopaths in future films. It was also cool to see old school Scream Queen Barbara Crampton (RE-ANIMATOR) as the mom of the doomed Davison clan, she’s making a mini-comeback with this role and an appearance in THE LORDS OF SALEM earlier this year.
There were so few characters to root for in this movie and that is never a good thing in slasher films because you can’t be overtly rooting for the bad guy(s) to eviscerate people based off of how horrible those people behave. there needs to be more of a rooting factor and truthfully there was only one person who was truly worthy of hoping to see make it out alive.
And the reveal of the motivation behind the assault on these people was a bit of a letdown because it just served to make the entire thing seem so pedestrian.
The Davison Family was just awful.
Final Verdict: A fun and thrilling slasher flick that never rises above being just pretty good because of the mundane motivation of the villains and the lack of empathy I could muster for the majority of the victims. YOU’RE NEXT does do well as a thrillingly bloody cat-and-mouse game with really nice visual touches by director Adam Wingard and the hero of the movie is one of the better characters to be created in recent horror films.
