Good, Bad & Ugly Review: Let’s Be Cops

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 20% (Critics) / 62% (Audience)
Directed By: Luke Greenfield
Written By: Luke Greenfield and Nicholas Thomas
Starring: Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., Rob Riggle, Nina Dobrev and Andy Garcia
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Synopsis:It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line. – (Source)

The Good:
Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson are both very charming and funny actors who you automatically want to like in whatever role they are playing. they also have great chemistry which I am sure is helped by their working together on the TV show NEW GIRL.

The Bad:
It is too bad that Wayans Jr. and Johnson couldn’t have been teamed up in a better movie. Instead they are dropped into a badly written, marginally humorous by the numbers buddy cop actioner that treads all the same water that every other movie of this genre have tread for the past 20 to 30 years.
The director and writer also made the colossal mistake of casting the hilarious Rob Riggle and having him play basically the straight man in this film.
And movies like this can be greatly assisted by having compelling villains but despite having two villains to choose from, neither Andy Garcia or James D’Arcy are given much to work with in their one dimensional, totally flat bad guy characters.

The Ugly:
Poor Nina Dobrev is wasted in this film. A quite capable actress and more than just a beautiful face, Dobrev was the token girlfriend in a movie that didn’t seem to have any interest in women characters at all.

Final Verdict: A disappointing movie that wastes its funny leading men’s wonderful comedic chemistry and does nothing new with the buddy action film genre. Not satisfied with wasting the lead actor’s talents, LET’S BE COPS also wastes the talents of the supporting cast too. A total letdown.

Grade: D+

    1. It was one of those situations where all of the funny was put into the trailer to sucker you into paying to see it.
      And I got duped. 😦
