Good, Bad & Ugly Review: Unfriended

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 66% (Critics) / 58% (Audience)
Directed By: Levan Gabriadze
Written By: Nelson Greaves
Starring: Shelley Hennig, Heather Sossaman, Matthew Bohrer, Courtney Halverson
Studio: Radius-TWC
Synopsis: A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend. – (Source)

The Good:
The idea to shoot this film from the POV of one of the character’s computer screen was a nifty one (this conceit was done to really great effect on a recent episode of MODERN FAMILY) and the movie was mercifully short.

The Bad:
Every single character was annoying as all hell and they were all just a bunch of awful little shits to boot. None of them were able to engender even an ounce of sympathy from me. And why does a movie that involves supernatural hoodoo need to “keep it real” by having so many instances of buffering video? I hate video buffering in real life and could have lived without that little touch of realism in this goofy horror movie.
Also the whole final third of UNFRIENDED devolves into a cacophony of unintelligible screaming that gave me a migraine.

The Ugly:
This movie should come with a warning that you should bring eye-glasses (or binoculars!) so you can easily read the multitude of IMs, posts and texts that make up more of the film than any dialogue.

Final Verdict: An interesting idea but a really bad movie full of unlikable characters, timid scares and muddled kill scenes, UNFRIENDED is the type of movie you land on by accident while channel surfing and end up watching out of boredom but it is definitely not worth schlepping out to a movie theater to stare at someone’s Skype session.

Grade: D-

  1. As much as I like Shelley Hennig in her role on Teen Wolf (she’s quite easy on the eyes, mind you) I have to say I may be skipping this one.
