The Good:
Mark Duplass was really good as the demented Josef; just the “Tubby” scene alone was enough to make me cringe. He was able to be a combination of eccentric, sympathetic, funny and outright crazy all within the span of one scene. I don’t think I will be able to look at him the same regardless of the roles he plays in the future.
The film also was able to generate a few moments of really gripping tension. And the ending took that tension right over the edge. I would have loved more of that.
The Bad:
It is like someone went a bit too cut happy in the editing room and delivered a film that is just missing scenes that would have given it the “something” that would make it feel more like a complete movie and less like a short film.
The Ugly:
I got a twinge of a try too hard art-house vibe from this movie. It’s like it was more interested in being quirky than fully embracing the best parts of the horror genre.
Final Verdict: A (far too convincing) performance by Mark Duplass and a killer (no pun intended) ending is not enough to remove the incomplete feeling of this film. I finished watching it and just felt unsatisfied.
Grade: C+
