Cover Me Monday

2011 has been the year of the Adele cover with Rolling in the Deep being covered by anyone with a camera phone, a YouTube account and no shame. So I figured it would be fitting to have the inaugural edition of Cover Me Monday feature Adele covering someone else. There were a few songs to choose from like her cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” or Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” but I chose to go with her cover of UK pop star Cheryl Cole‘s “Promise This”.

Adele – Promise This (Cheryl Cole Cover)

While Adele tends to make anything she sings sound great I chose this particular song to show what can happen when a brilliant singer tackles a frothy pop song. The original is a shallow bit of dance-pop nothing that is done no favors by Cole’s lightweight (and technologically enhanced) voice and routine phrasing. Sung by Adele it actually becomes a deeply soulful song with seemingly more meaning despite being the same goofy little tune that heavily references the French children’s song “Alouette” in its lyrics. Take a listen to the original Cheryl Cole version below:
