The 10 Best Token Black Guys in Movie History

06. THE SHINING – Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers)

This may completely expose my personal level of weirdness but I am an unabashed fan of Scatman Crothers. Even before he was the voice of Jazz on THE TRANSFORMERS cartoon I found myself following Scatman’s career. From ROOTS to ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST to HONG KONG PHOOEY to even the Scott Baio teen comedy ZAPPED, I loved me some Scatman Crothers. So imagine my glee when Scatman turns up as the psychically gifted head chef of the Overlook Hotel in THE SHINING and then imagine my disappointment when Jack Nicholson took him out with an axe to the chest. I was a sad (and traumatized!) little kid while watching that scene in the theater.

  1. There have been token Black Guys Since the History of Movies..But some of these guys are not just tokens.,They only hang around White’s off the set. I’m saying you don’t see alot of them at any Black function.like the soul Train awards or any affair given by Black Ent…

  2. Well a couple of them you don’t see period because their careers have dried up, they have retired, or they are dead.

  3. I disagree with the following with explanation: Al from Die Hard. Really?! He is not the token black guy when there are other black guys that played in that movie(remember the computer guy for Han’s team, or the driver for McClane or Little Johnson(FBI)? So no on Al, who was a great guy in that movie. One consideration, Tyreese’s part in those bad Transoformer movies, Billy Dee in Tim Burton’s Batman(DA Dent). Actually anything Billy Dee was in w/o Diana Ross or James Earl Jones.
