Good, Bad & Ugly Review: Piranha 3DD

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 12% (Critics) / 32% (Audience)
Directed By: John Gulager
Written By: Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton and Joel Soisson
Starring: Danielle Panabaker, David Hasselhoff, Matt Bush and Ving Rhames
Studio: The Weinstein Co.

Synopsis: After the terror unleashed on Lake Victoria in Piranha 3D, the pre-historic school of blood thirsty piranhas are back. This time, no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of summer’s best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park. Christopher Lloyd reprises his role as the eccentric piranha expert with survivor Paul Scheer and a partially devoured Ving Rhames back for more fish frenzy. David Hasselhoff trades in the sandy beaches of “Baywatch” to be a celebrity lifeguard at the racy water park. Prepare for double the terror, double the action and double the D’s in this sequel also starring Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka and David Koechner.

The Good:
I have to give David Hasselhoff a lot of credit for his willingness to so gleefully make fun of his own persona. “David Hasselhoff” was a delightful jackass with an ego as large as ocean and The Hoff pulled it off pretty damn well.

The Bad:
This movie was bad, I mean really bad. And not in a “we know we are making a crappy movie so we will revel in it” way like Alexandre Aja did in the first 3D movie. The jokes were forced and unfunny, the effects were pitiful looking (especially the piranhas) and direction was a mess.

The Ugly:
Ving Rhames small part was bland and not very interesting despite having prostethic legs with shotguns attached to them

Final Verdict: A truly bad movie that wastes the talents of the majority of the cast and carries over none of the sense of fun that was present in the original Piranha 3D. Thankfully David Hasselhoff coems in to give a truly funny performance lampooning his own celebrity that while not saving this film at least makes it not a total waste of 82 minutes. D+
