Favorite Doctor Who Special: The Waters of Mars

This was a cinema level special that had influences from classic horror films like ALIEN and THE THING. The Doctor arrives on a Mars base where a centuries old organism is using water to infect and control the base crew. This was a Doctor who had no Companion as a calming influence and was on a very dark place after the loss of Donna Noble in his life. So with no one to pull him back from basically playing God he decides to change a fixed point in time. The creature effects were really cool looking and the inclusion of the always dependable Lindsay Duncan as the captain of the Mars base was perfect casting. Duncan brings a combo of quiet dignified fury to this role that makes you instantly root for her. And the ending was so dark and showed that while some think of DOCTOR WHO as some sort of goofy kids show, it is capable of being so much more.
