Harley Quinn was created as part of the seminal TV show, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and proved so popular that she was then moved over to the comics eventually getting her own book that is one of the best sellers in the business today.
Dr. Harleen Quinzell was a psychiatrist working at Arkham Asylum, the place where all of Batman’s insane villains end up, and while working there developed an unhealthy obsession/attraction to The Joker. During their sessions, The Joker manipulates Dr. Quinzell into falling in love with him and eventually putting on a costume, calling herself Harley Quinn and becoming The Joker’s sidekick/girlfriend. The Joker relationship is pretty one-sided with Harley being head over heels in love and The Joker being an abusive, manipulative asshat towards her.
Later on in her criminal exploits, Harley becomes best friends with Batman villain Poison Ivy who injects Harley with an experimental serum that gives the demented Quinn enhanced strength and agility. This makes an already dangerously deranged psychopath even more deadly.
