Tatsu Yamashiro was the object of affection of two brothers, Maseo and Takeo, but Tatsu was only in love with Maseo who she ended up marrying and having family with. Takeo did not take rejection well and plotted his revenge against Tatsu and Maseo. Takeo, having risen to a high rank in the Yakuza, acquired a mystical sword called The Soultaker (because it trapped the souls of anyone who was killed with it) and decided to use it to kill his brother and take Tatsu as his prize. During the two brothers battle, Takeo killed Maseo with The Soultaker and set fire to Tatsu and Maseo’s home. Tatsu was able to disarm Takeo and take The Soultaker from her brother-in-law who then fled but by then Tatsu’s home had become engulfed in flames and her children died in the fire.
Tatsu was now all alone except for the cursed sword that housed the soul of her husband. Tatsu sought tutelage from a renowned samurai who enhanced her already capable skills and when her training was complete she left for America with the goal of becoming a masked vigilante and locating Takeo since he had taken up residence in America himself. She eventually found Takeo in Gotham City where she crossed paths with Batman. After several stops and starts, she was able to exact her revenge against Takeo and imprison his soul in the sword along with her husband.
Katana is another character that has never been a member of The Suicide Squad before and she also is a Batman supporting character.
