Rick Flag is a career soldier and was actually the leader of the original Task Force X that was made up of other soldiers (one of whom was Flag’s girlfriend) with specialized training. On one of the original team’s missions all of Flag’s team died. This sent Flag into a tailspin where he began working dangerous solo covert missions for a few years before Amanda Waller recruited him to be the field commander of her new Task Force X.
Flag is what you would expect from a career military man from a long line of soldiers. He is honorable though which brings him into conflict with Waller because he doesn’t always agree with her methods.

El Diablo is a former gang member who was sentenced to die for his part in setting a fire that accidentally killed an innocent family. While on death row he was cursed to bond with a vengeance demon that gave him pyrokinetic abilities and was then forced into service as a member of The Suicide Squad.

Slipknot was a scientist working for a chemical company who developed a formula for creating super durable ropes (stop laughing) and instead of securing a patent for his new invention he decided to become a super-villain and fight Firestorm (a hero whose nickname is “The Nuclear Man” so this was another dumb decision on Slipknot’s part) which resulted in his being sent to prison. A lot. Slipknot is basically a loser’s loser and his losing streak continued unabated when he cames to the attention of Waller and was forced into servitude as part of The Suicide Squad.
