Cover Me Monday: Seven Nation Army

This week’s cover is the Ben l’Oncle Soul version of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army“. The l’Oncle Soul version takes the well recognized and imposing guitar riff of the original and turns it into a groovy 1960s inspired soul/pop tune. It’s such a good take on the original that it has been copied almost note for note (extraneous runs included) by X-FACTOR UK runner up Marcus Collins. Check the Collins version out because the musical plagiarism is so shameless that it’s funny. Continue reading Cover Me Monday: Seven Nation Army

The Wayback Machine: I Want To Thank You

Alicia Myers is the former lead singer of the group One Way (another R&B act that is under appreciated) who embarked on a solo career in the early 1980s that included several gospel tinged, uptempo numbers. Myers may not be very well known and it’s likely that most people can’t name any of her songs but they will still know them when they hear them because they have been sampled by contemporary artists.

The Wayback Machine: Victim

While today Candi Staton is best known for being a gospel singer (she was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame dontchaknow), back in the day she dabbled in that devilish secular music. While she is remembered for several songs, most notably “Young Hearts Run Free” (performed by Mercutio in the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet) she had bunch of other great songs…my favorite of the lot being “Victim”.

Cover Me Monday: I’m Every Woman

In memory of the passing of one of the best voices in music history I decided to go with a more uptempo bit of Whitney Houston cover song magic with her cover of Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” instead of the more schmaltzy “I Will Always Love You”, both of which are on THE BODYGUARD soundtrack (that CD was chock full of awesome). I’m Every Woman Continue reading Cover Me Monday: I’m Every Woman

The Wayback Machine: Get On the Floor

“Get On The Floor” is a song from Michael Jackson’s OFF THE WALL album. A Michael Jackson Song!?!? How can an MJ song be in need of recognition? He’s the King of Pop and whatnot! What’s the dilly, yo?
Well all will be explained, my friends.

Shuffling On My iPod: Maximum Balloon

Producer turned artist David Sitek (from TV On The Radio fame) is the mind behind Maximum Balloon. Sitek teams up with Dragons of Zynth frontman Aku to give the world this electro-tinged dance track. My first time hearing this song was in a “Women We Love” video from Esquire UK that featured the ever so lovely Daisy Lowe. I recommend watching it…it’s quite the stimulating video. Maximum Balloon feat. Aku – Tiger Continue reading Shuffling On My iPod: Maximum Balloon

Shuffling On My iPod: Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord is a South African hip-hop trio (there is a DJ to go along with the photogenic twosome in the picture) with a pretty singular style and sound about them. “I Fink U Freeky” is their newest song and it has grown on me like a malicious tumor. The video for the song also may be the greatest thing to ever appear on YouTube this side of the Spirit of Truth. Die Antwoord – I Fink U Freeky Continue reading Shuffling On My iPod: Die Antwoord

The Wayback Machine: No One Gets the Prize

I love R&B music. I was raised in a household where it was played all the time and the music of the 70s and 80s really holds a special place in my heart. As I have grown older I find myself looking back to those times and noticing that some truly great music was released back then that came and went with very little fanfare and even less recognition. To that end I have decided to share some of the R&B music that I think deserves to be heard and appreciated.

Cover Me Monday: A Sunday Kind Of Love

While most people associate the dearly departed songstress Etta James with her signature tune “At Last”, I have always been partial to her cover of this Louis Prima number that was first popularized in the 1940s by Fran Warren. “A Sunday Kind of Love” has been recorded by a laundry list of great performers from Ella Fitzgerald to Reba McEntire  but to me it belongs to Etta James. A Sunday Kind Of Love Continue reading Cover Me Monday: A Sunday Kind Of Love
