The fourth season finale of GAME OF THRONES had a ton of amazing moments from Harryhausen-esque animated skeletons to Stannis riding to the rescue beyond The Wall to the epic battle between The Hound and Brienne…it was just an incredible episode of television. But nothing stood out more to me than the scene(s) where Tyrion exacted his revenge upon two of those who have wronged him the most gravely.
For what was supposed to be a “catch your breath” episode after the glorious death of King Joffrey last week, Breaker of Chains providd some meaty moments. From Dany rolling into Mereen like she owned the place to Arya and The Hound rolling a poor single father for his cash to The Wildlings ransacking villages to Stannis’ Secret Small Council of Shireen & Davos coming up with an idea to get funding for their king to Littlefinger making his move. And I am not even going to touch that Jaime/Cersei scene with a ten foot pole. My favorite scene was the beginning of Tywin spending some quality time with his new favorite family member.
There are stern fathers and then there are cold, authoritarian, self-esteem crushing fathers like one Lord Tywin Lannister from GAME OF THRONES. The patriarch of the Lannister clan is the anti-Cliff Huxtable. He rarely has a kind word for any of his kids and on the off chance that he does compliment them it is usually immediately followed by him cutting them down especially poor Tyrion who he routinely refers to as a “stump”. So in honor of the Westeros Father of the Year I put together a video of all of Tywin’s interactions with his 3 children so you too can marvel at the world class acting of Charles Dance in the role that I don’t think anyone could possibly play better..
Aside from being pretty damn funny…actor Charles Dance drives home the absolute wretchedness of E.L. James’ writing with his line readings of one of the more randy sections of 50 Shades of Grey. Click onward for the video.
“A Man Without Honor” was a bit heavier on dialog than action and the best scene for me was the further adventures of Little Orphan Arya and her ward Daddy Lannister. Tywin Lannister is surrounded by generals yet he can only have deep, meaningful conversations with a tweenage girl he has just met. That this man of great intellect and power is surrounded by so many idiots has been shown in previous episodes and this exchange was just extra fun. The two characters went back and forth with Tywin making it known that he is aware when Arya is lying while Arya stays on her toes every time Tywin thinks he has her cornered.
I have been a fan of Charles Dance ever since i first saw him in the so bad its good Eddie Murphy movie The Golden Child and Maisie Williams is one of the best child actors on TV today. Together these two have some of the most natural chemistry in their scenes and that says something considering the wealth of great acting on this show.
