Bad Movies That Rock: Sleepaway Camp

Reason #4 That It Rocks: Mel

Sleepaway-Camp3
Mel, a 60 or 70 year old schmo (who looks like the regular emcee at the Friar’s Club Roasts) who ran the doomed summer camp with nary a thought to the safety of the children in his care. Murders abound under his watch and he just repeatedly sweeps them under the rug and acts like everything is perfectly fine. But the best thing about Mel is that the filmmakers behind SLEEPAWAY CAMP expected audiences to either believe he had enough game to be pulling chicks young enough to be his grand-daughter or that the young ladies working at this summer camp were using it as a cover for their escorting business. One of those notions is more farfetched than the other but I will leave it up to the individual to decide which. Mel also was a piss poor detective who mistakenly blamed the wrong camper for all the murders and proceeded to beat the poor kid almost to death before finally getting the death he so richly deserved.
I’ll just leave this little clip of Mel’s best moments to illustrate why he was such a bizarrely interesting character who fit this goofy movie like a glove.

  1. He may be the owner of a summer camp for kids but despite that he sucked at his job considering that he spent most of his time hitting on one of the counselors (i.e. Meg) and doesn’t try to shut the camp down when the murders take effect. Add to the fact that he accuses Ricky for being the camp killer despite not having any evidence or proof makes him even more unlikable even by the movie’s standards.
