The Good:
The first thing that I noticed with this comic is just how amazing the art is and the second thing I noticed was that it looks almost nothing like the art that I am used to seeing from Howard Porter. In the past Porter was a totally acquired taste with his work being consistently hit or miss. With this book though he has taken a quantum leap into the stratosphere of doe of the top artists in the field. His work is clean and crisp with an insane amount of detail while also being full of flair and drama. I am amazed at how good this book looks and even more astounded at the fact Porter is inking his own stuff. This book is just gorgeous.
Now to the story…as a first issue you don’t go in expecting to have every mystery laid out for you but I was pleased with what was given to me. I expected to get zero info on who these future heroes were but Giffen and DeMatteis let that cat out of the bag almost immediately and still managed to keep me completely in the dark about what the bigger mysteries of this come are. Giffen and DeMatteis also have lost none of their chemistry and wit. They are not going for the full on slapstick like their last stab at the Justice League but the bickering and banter is pretty funny without being overdone and despite being a bit wordy you don’t feel like there is too much talking going on, it feels just right. I am also liking how these versions of the characters we know so well have been flipped around with Superman being a favorite of mine. Having Superman be a colossal douche verging on the sociopath side of things is a neat twist and I can’t wait to see where they take this character in particular.

The Bad:
I know it is only the first issue and there are reasons for all of these characters to act the way they are acting but I am really not feeling this version of Wonder Woman…she’s a bit too one note and the whole maniacal, sexually aggressive amazon thing seems a bit too cliche.

The Ugly:
I took an immediate dislike to these Wonder Twins and it’s not a love to hate type thing…I just disliked every second of time they were given on the page. They just annoyed me from their first caption.

Final Verdict: It is not often that one can get an original take on characters that have been around for decades but Giffen and DeMatteis have managed to present a completely outside the line version of the Justice league with the right mix mystery, intrigue and humor to keep me coming back for more. Coupled with some phenomenal art by Howard Porter and this book is a winner right out of the gate.
