They Should Change The Name of The Show To SuperGIRLFRIEND
I miss the “Girl Power!” aspect that was at the forefront of this show in Season 1 and I am saddened that the show has gotten all CW-ized to be about a girl and her boyfriend more than anything else. Sure the first season had the Kara/James dynamic as an undercurrent but it was never the engine that drove the car like this Mon-el stuff is now. Even in episodes that focused on Kara and James and their unrequited feelings for one another I never felt like Kara was being diminished in favor of James and his wants or needs yet that is pretty much all I get from the Mon-el/Kara relationship. Even before they became an official couple Kara was being lessened in favor of a focus on Mon-el and his past, his feelings, his wants.
Once upon a time Kara was a career woman who decided her passion was being a journalist and having her career was as important as her super-heroics. Now Kara seems to not give a darn about having a job and instead her focus is almost totally on being Mon-el’s girlfriend. She spends almost all of her time at the DEO and when she isn’t there she is at the bar Mon-el works at or being obnoxiously affectionate with Mon-el at her apartment. There doesn’t really seem to be much of Kara Danvers left any more. Instead we have 24/7 Supergirl going on. I miss Kara at work and striving to be more than just a caped do-gooder and doting girlfriend. A lot of time was spent showing that Kara while being mentored by Cat Grant (the sorely missed Callista Flockhart) was realizing what she wanted as a person and not just as the super-powered alien who fought crime and invasions. I would love to see that side of Kara become a focal point of the show again.
