Following in the footsteps of my Best Looking New Fall TV Shows post I felt it necessary to address the flip side. I was pretty spot on with some of my choices from last years post (I saw the horrible writing on the wall with MULANEY) and completely wrong on one in particular (alas poor SELFIE, we hardly knew ye). So sit back, relax and let me provide a PSA to any unsuspecting TV viewers to stay far away from the shows under the cut.
SUPERGIRL (CBS)
Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago with her famous cousin. Now at the age 24, she finally embraces her superhuman abilities to be the hero she was always meant to be.
I so wanted to like this trailer for SUPERGIRL. Its a show based on a comic book which is right up my alley; it comes from producer Greg Berlanti who hasn’t failed me yet when it comes to adapting comics to TV; and the cast assembled gave me lots of hope. Then I watched the damn thing and was aghast at how terrible it was. This preview used every sappy rom-com cliche one could think of and then just slapped a bit of action onto the end of it. The total disappointment I feel for this show now just bums me the hell out.
DR. KEN (ABC)
Doctor turned actor/comedian Ken Jeong plays Dr. Ken, a brilliant physician with no bedside manner. He is always trying to be a good doctor, as well as a good husband and dad to his two kids. Luckily, his therapist wife Allison is just the right partner to keep things sane.
Ken Jeong is a funny guy. He is even funny in things that are otherwise not funny. So imagine my surprise when this trailer for his new ABC show accomplished the difficult task of sucking all the funny out of the normally hilarious Jeong. How do you take an edgy comedic actor like Jeong, who is fresh off a run on a wonderfully quirky show like COMMUNITY, and saddle him with a formulaic sitcom (complete with maddening laughtrack) that is terribly unfunny? And if nothing else screams “utter dreck” about this trailer then the inclusion of that damnable Katy Perry song just solidifies the upcoming shitstorm that this show will be.
