Cover Me Monday: Why Don’t You Love Me

Sometimes you don’t really know what songs could benefit from being a little “rocked up” and to be honest this song is a prime example. I am not that big a fan of the Beyonce original of this song…it was yet another in the Beyonce oeuvre of sassy R&B, “I am woman hear me be melismatic!” tunes and if you have heard one of those puppies you’ve heard more than enough. But in the hands of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals it becomes a hard-charging, bluesy rock song with Ms Potter doing her damnedest to channel the energy of Grace … Continue reading Cover Me Monday: Why Don’t You Love Me

Cover Me Monday: I Heard It Through the Grapevine

This week we’ll take a listen to a version of the oft-covered song “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. This song was originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1966 for Motown. The song is a classic and has been reinterpreted through the years by everyone from Gladys Knight & The Pips to the Kaiser Chiefs. The version I am most fond of is by the British punk band The Slits. The Slits version took a standard R&B classic and roughed it up a bit so that it became a harder more rock-ish song. The Slits – I … Continue reading Cover Me Monday: I Heard It Through the Grapevine

Shuffling On My iPod: Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks is the personification of the term unsigned hype. Originally from Harlem, NY but not getting any love in her home country, Azealia skipped across the pond to the UK where she was quickly embraced by the hip-hop loving youth culture and discerning music critics there. She came in 3rd place on the Sound of 2012 list (an annual list of promising new musical talent that counts acts like 50 Cent, Adele, Corrine Bailey Rae, and Jessie J as past winners) and was #1 on NME’s annual Cool List. Azealia is the flip side to Nicki Minaj…focusing on her … Continue reading Shuffling On My iPod: Azealia Banks

Cover Me Monday

2011 has been the year of the Adele cover with Rolling in the Deep being covered by anyone with a camera phone, a YouTube account and no shame. So I figured it would be fitting to have the inaugural edition of Cover Me Monday feature Adele covering someone else. There were a few songs to choose from like her cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” or Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” but I chose to go with her cover of UK pop star Cheryl Cole‘s “Promise This”.

The Top 10 Songs By Jacksons Not Named Michael or Janet

Jacksons
Everyone is wondering who that white guy is sitting next to Joe

The musical Jackson’s have a long and storied career going from the beginnings of the Jackson 5 to the mega-stardom and icon status of Janet and Michael in their solo careers. It is due to the gigantic shadow cast by Michael and Janet that a lot of the music made by the rest of the Jackson clan has gone unnoticed (in some cases criminally) so I felt it was my duty to spread a little bit of the love around to some of the other musical offerings by folks from the Jackson clan with this list of tunes that, while heavy on the Jermaine catalog, touches upon pretty much the entirety of the music put out by the various children and grandkids.

The Five Worst Actors Turned Singers

William Shatner
William Shatner is in the “Actor Turned Bad Singer” Hall of Fame

Scratch the surface of any actor and underneath you will find a frustrated singer dying to burst out and start belting a tune. Sadly most of these thespians don’t realize that they have little to no musical talent which usually results in auditory disasters like the unfortunate musical stylings of the 5 actors turned singers on this list. So sit back, pour yourself a glass of iced tea and prepare to be amazed by the sounds that these fellas considered to be quality music:
