Will Win: Allison Janney, I, TONYA

Allison Janney was a beast in I, TONYA. As Tonya Harding’s heinous mother, Janney devoured that movie and anyone who dared to enter a scene with her. She was a larger-than-life heinous character with absolutely no redeeming qualities (which I know some people complain about) who was like one of those evil Disney villains who torments the princess come to life. She played every note of this character pitch perfect and the tone she brought to role fit with the tone of the movie. It also didn’t hurt that she had most of the funniest lines in the movie and she delivered them with such acid-tongued snark that it was really hard to hate her like she deserved to be hated.

Should Win: Allison Janney, I, TONYA

While Laurie Metcalf was in the running for me and I loved what she did in LADYBIRD, I just don’t think anyone else matched Janney in this category.

Got Snubbed: Tiffany Haddish, GIRLS TRIP

Tiffany Haddish was a revelation in GIRLS TRIP and stole the entire movie with her hilarious performance. So why didn’t she get a nomination? It’s not like a breakout performance by an actress in a supporting role in a all-women comedy blockbuster hit has never been rewarded with an Oscar nomination before…back in 2011 Melissa McCarthy’s performance in BRIDESMAIDS saw her get a Best Supporting Actress nomination, years before that Marisa Tomei was given the same treatment and actually own the Oscar for MY COUSIN VINNY and in my humble opinion Haddish deserved the same recognition for what she did in GIRLS TRIP.
