My Five Favorite HBO Series

As I was coming up with my list of favorite HBO series I gave some thought to how there has always been a lot of discussion about the impact of THE SOPRANOS and just what an amazing show it is with some people declaring it the best TV show ever. This got me to thinking about how I am not one of those people who hold THE SOPRANOS at such a lofty position. Sure I recognize it’s importance in shaping the landscape of dramatic television but I honestly think that, as a show, THE SOPRANOS really wasn’t that great. To me the show was incredibly average in terms of storytelling but overcame all of that with great casting and acting. I defy anyone to point to one major storyline in the entire run of the show past Season 1 or 2 that was really all that amazing. Instead The SOPRANOS was wonderful at individual scenes featuring great acting performances that are very memorable but not in story arcs that elicit the same fond memories.

Let’s Take A Moment To Appreciate The Greatness Of James Gandolfini

The world lost a great actor last week when James Gandolfini passed away at the age of 51. Many tributes have been done that spent the majority of the time focusing on the groundbreaking performance Gandolfini gave as Tony Soprano on the HBO series THE SOPRANOS. Now I will gladly admit that Gandolfini did some really great work as Tony Soprano but I have fond memories of some of Gandolfini’s non-Tony roles that I would like to show a little appreciation for.

Man of Steel Is A Success So…What About Lex Luthor?

luthor
MAN OF STEEL is on track to net over $125 million bucks (which is huge especially for a 3 day/non-holiday weekend) and Warner Brothers has already greenlit the sequel. Now this movie is the first Superman film to not feature Lex Luthor since SUPERMAN 3 gave us Robert Vaughn and Richard Pryor as Superman’s adversaries even though we got glimpses of LuthorCorp building and trucks so we know Lex is a major player in this new Superman universe. the question to be asked though is: who should be Lex Luthor?

My 5 Unpopular Lost Opinions

LOST was a great show and I loved it. But there were some things about the show that served to temper my love at times and since I recently watched a ton of episodes in a sort of recap marathon, those issues all came to the forefront again. So with that in mind I decided to share my 5 unpopular LOST opinions with the Internet. Take a gander and let me know if you disagree with my opinions.

Henry Cavill Wants To Make A Superman/Batman Movie

superman-batman
In an interview with SFX, the MAN OF STEEL star says he’d be all for a World’s Finest movie that teamed up Superman with the Dark Knight:

I think it would be really interesting with the age-old Batman/Superman conflict,” he tells SFX, “because they are two different sides of the same coin and their methods are entirely different. And I think it would actually make for an interesting story as to why, first of all, they were going head to head and how. I think that would make a great story.

So that instantly got my mind racing with thoughts of just who would be the Batman opposite Cavill’s Superman?

My 5 Favorite Gender Swapped Characters In Movies & TV

mos-jenny-olsen
With all the hubbub over the apparent gender swapping of Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen into Jenny Olsen in the upcoming MAN OF STEEL movie (and man are the more emotional geeks having major fits), it got me to thinking about other examples of gender swapping in TV and film that I really enjoyed. Aside from the realization that BATTLESTAR GALACTICA did gender swapping better than any other property, it also became apparent that no one ever gender swaps a female into a male in anything. What’s up with dat?!?!?
So with that being said click away to see my list of favorite gender swapped characters.

The 3 Game of Thrones Character That I Wish Had Already Shown Up On The TV Show

game-of-thrones
I am a huge GAME OF THRONES fan and this current season is shaping up to be my favorite especially if things occur before the end of the season that I expect to occur. However, my love of the show hasn’t stopped me from wondering why certain characters from the books have not appeared on the show yet. I get that George R.R. Martin’s books are massive and filled with legions of characters so the TV show has been creative in merging characters or eliminating characters entirely and giving their storylines to others (its looking like Willas Tyrell’s place will be taken by his brother Loras). That being said I feel that there are three characters we should have met already on the show just because they are impact players who need (and deserve) to be fleshed out a bit more before being plunged into the middle of already established characters and stories. So click onward brave soldiers and be prepared for spoilers aplenty.

Four Actresses That Would Make A Better Storm Than Halle Berry

halle-berry-storma
There are very few things that comic book fans can agree on when discussing movie adaptations of their favorite books: THE DARK KNIGHT was dang near perfect, DAREDEVIL was a bit of a train wreck and Halle Berry as Storm in the X-MEN movies was just awful. So upon seeing the photo of Berry in full Storm costuming, that returning X-MEN director Bryan Singer tweeted just fills me with dread. With the changes that were made to the established cinematic continuity by the last X-MEN movie my hopes were up that the opportunity would be taken to rectify the dismal casting decision of hiring Berry to play Storm but alas it was not to be. That won’t stop me, however, from doing my own wishful casting of actresses that would be much better in the role than Halle Berry though.

Casting A Female Doctor Who

I recently watched a video of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/BATTLESTAR GALACTICA/TORCHWOOD writer Jane Espenson where she discussed the women of DOCTOR WHO and the conversation turned to the subject of a female Doctor (with Espenson suggesting that ANGEL alum Amy Ackerson would be a perfect casting choice) and it inspired me to do my own bit of wishful casting. So click onward to see my Top 5 choices of who I think would make pretty cool lady Doctors.

Let’s Take A Moment To Appreciate The Greatness Of Aquaman

Aquaman riding flying fish

Now I know most people have a very low opinion of Aquaman based off of how useless he was made to be in the old SUPER-FRIENDS cartoon but that was a poor representation of what is really one of the coolest super-heroes around.

The Modern Doctor Who Characters That Should Have Become Companions

Wilfred Mott would have been on this list but I count his appearance in the END OF TIME ep as being a full on Companion
Wilfred Mott would have been on this list but I count his appearance in the END OF TIME ep as being a full on Companion

Everyone has a few throw away or minor characters that have appeared once or twice on DOCTOR WHO that we all grew attached to and wanted to see them become a fixture on the deck of the TARDIS. So I put together my own little list of modern Who guest stars that would have been perfect as full-time Companions.

Where Is The Cast Of Veronica Mars Now?

veronica-mars
With the news of the VERONICA MARS movie Kickstarter meeting its proposed budget ($3.5 million so far!) in record time resulting in the filming of the movie being set up for this summer, I started wondering what has the cast of this show been up to since the last time we saw them in Neptune? Aside from hanging out with show creator Rob Thomas at Kristen Bell’s house that is.
